We’re big on country values.
Our values as a business are all centred around experience. The client experience - and the employee experience.
We treat these the same. We value people, we value ideas.
In our business, we want everyone to contribute. We share ideas and opinions and we are transparent about our procedures so we can ensure we deliver on our promises and deliver the best possible experience to our customer.
You have chosen to be a part of a 100% Australian family owned and operated company.
For 100+ years and 3 generations, our family has actively operated farming enterprises and our flour and speciality milling operations located in Dubbo, the heart of the NSW wheat belt. We are in control of our product from paddock to customer. We also rely on long-established partnerships with local farming families.
Our father John has always said “we don’t want to be the biggest, just the best at what we do”. We have taken that mantra and made it our own.
Today, we employ 90 staff who are all passionate about being an “Extraordinary Company”.
We pride ourselves on being an Australian owned and operated family company in an industry dominated by multinationals. We are at our best when we are swift in our actions, focused on and aligned with our customers & our staff are driven by our core values culminating in excellence in quality and service.
As teenagers we were both involved in the family business helping mum, dad and team where we could after school and during the holidays. Tim joined the business in a full-time capacity at 18 and I at 25.
Over the years, we have learnt the fundamentals of the business, starting from the ground up, Tim gaining milling qualifications, working in the engineering department & grain procurement, and I delved into the regulatory administrative side of sales, logistics, finance, food safety and WH&S. In 2003 Tim and I took over the running of the business when John & Diane retired.
Since then, we haven’t stopped working alongside an ever-growing team to expand this legacy, fuelled by a company culture that celebrates victories, encourages lifelong learning and sparks happiness.

Bulla Cream
the beginning
In 1910, Thomas Sloan established the Bulla Cream Company in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds. Thomas pioneered a new method of thickening cream, which involved pasteurising in open cans in wood fired copper. Thomas’ brother, William, supplied the milk from his dairy farm in Bulla, and together they created the famous thickened cream and distributed it into the CBD in an Uber. Wait, no, it was by horse and cart.
the middle
Before long, Thomas’ brother in law Hugh, and Hugh’s brother Jack wanted a dollop of the action and they – along with Hugh’s daughter and son in law – soon made up the three families that launched Bulla into its years of success.
The Sloans, Anderson and Downeys all still operate the business in harmony today.
the now
Bulla remains one of Australia’s largest family-owned dairy producers, and the brand now operates out of the country Victorian town of Colac. The rich fertile soil provides pure, creamy milk by the bucket-load – and this facilitates the growth of the Bulla brand and the diversity of Bulla dairy products.

Cottage Cheese Farm
Cottage Cheese Farm and Mediterranean Cheeses were created by Antonio Cristiano, an Italian immigrant who grew up on a small dairy farm in Southern Italy. Wanting to recreate the authentic cheeses he experienced as a child, he established Cottage Cheese Farm and Mediterranean Cheeses which quickly grew to be a well-recognised brand in Melbourne’s North and now supplies customers throughout Melbourne and Australia. The business is now being carried on by the next generation of the Cristiano family.
In 2014, Cottage Cheese Farm was awarded a grant by the Australian and Victorian Governments pursuant to the Melbourne’s North Innovation and Investment Fund (MNIIF) to assist in relocating the business to a modern, brand new facility in Maygar Boulevard, Broadmeadows. Cottage Cheese Farm moved into the new purpose-built premises mid-2019. The new premises have facilitated the introduction of new cheeses to our award-winning range. We look forward to continuing this growth and a bright future in the new premises.
Cottage Cheese Farm and Mediterranean Cheeses now supplies a broad range of quality cheese and dairy products including mozzarella, haloumi, ricotta, fetta and yoghurts.

Great Aussie Pie Competition
The Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition was established by John Ross and Craig Perry in 1989. Their efforts and passion for pie excellence have helped to raise quality standards of pies across Australia; enhancing a sense of pride among bakers who specialise in pie making. The judging panel consists of TAFE trainers, chefs, bakers and bakery reps who are all experts in their field. They provide valuable feedback on each entry for aspiring winners. This Competition is the industry’s benchmark for pie excellence, bar none.
In 2011 the rights to run the Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition were bought by the Australian Pie Council Pty Ltd, a consortium of industry leading companies in the baking industry. Although Competition Director John Ross has stepped back from full time involvement, he remains the face of the Competition and will continue to consult the Council on future events. The existing Competition judges and support crew will also remain.
To recognize the growing gourmet pie category and the diversity of bakers in Australia, the Competition has been expanded to include vegetarian and non-red meat ingredients. Since 2012 the Competition has been known as the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.
